Flick stick buying guide

A flick stick, also called a curtain wand, is a rod that hangs from the top of a curtain at its leading edge. You hold the stick to open and close the curtain, so you do not need to pull on the fabric. This guide covers how to choose the length, the material and the colour, and how a flick stick attaches.

How to choose the length

Choose a length that puts the bottom of the stick within easy reach. Measure from the runner at the track down to where your hand comfortably reaches, then pick the closest length. A higher track needs a longer stick.

Our flick sticks come in these lengths:

Length Clear acrylic Aluminium White fibreglass
0.75 m Clear
1 m Clear White, Black, Silver
1.25 m Clear White, Black, Silver
1.5 m Clear White, Black, Silver
2 m Clear White
2.5 m White

Flick sticks of 1.25 m and longer are sent by courier at a flat rate that is shown at checkout. Flick sticks of 1 m and under ship at our standard rates.

How to choose the material and colour

  • Clear acrylic is see through, so it does not stand out against the curtain. The rod is 9.4 mm thick in the 0.75 m, 1 m and 1.25 m lengths and 11.7 mm thick in the 1.5 m and 2 m lengths.
  • Aluminium comes in white, black and silver, so you can match the track or the fabric.
  • Fibreglass comes in white and covers the two longest lengths, 2 m and 2.5 m.

Each flick stick is sold per piece. A pair of curtains that opens in the middle has two leading edges, so it needs two flick sticks.

How a flick stick attaches

Every flick stick we sell has a metal snap clip at the top. The clip swivels, and it is joined to the rod by a metal ring.

  1. Find the first runner (glider) at the leading edge of the curtain. This is the edge you move when you open and close the curtain.
  2. Press the lever on the snap clip to open it, hook the clip through the eye of the runner, then let the lever go so the clip closes.
  3. Let the stick hang straight down, then use it to draw the curtain open and closed.

The clip needs a runner with an eye to hook onto. Our pleat and flick stick runners are made for this. They come for the Standard system and the Streamline system, in white and black.

Flick stick questions

What length flick stick do I need?

Choose a length that puts the bottom of the stick within easy reach. Measure from the runner at the track down to where your hand comfortably reaches, then pick the closest length. We sell lengths from 0.75 m to 2.5 m.

What is the difference between acrylic, aluminium and fibreglass flick sticks?

Clear acrylic is see through and comes in five lengths from 0.75 m to 2 m. Aluminium comes in white, black and silver in 1 m, 1.25 m and 1.5 m. Fibreglass comes in white in the two longest lengths, 2 m and 2.5 m.

Will a flick stick fit my curtain track?

A flick stick does not attach to the track itself. Its snap clip hooks onto a runner, so it needs a runner with an eye. Our pleat and flick stick runners are made for this and come for the Standard system and the Streamline system.

How does a flick stick attach?

Each flick stick has a metal snap clip at the top. Open the clip, hook it through the eye of the first runner at the leading edge of the curtain, then let it close.

Do I need one flick stick or two?

A single curtain that opens to one side has one leading edge, so it needs one flick stick. A pair of curtains that opens in the middle has two leading edges, so it needs two.

How are long flick sticks delivered?

Flick sticks 1.25 m, 1.5 m and 2 m long are sent by courier for $33.00. The 2.5 m flick stick is sent by courier for $53.00. Flick sticks 1 m and under ship at our standard rates. See our shipping policy.

Can I return a flick stick?

Yes. You can return it for change of mind within 14 days of delivery if it is unused and in its original packaging, and you pay the return postage. If it arrives faulty or damaged, contact us and we will repair it, replace it or refund it. See our refund policy.
